Grand Bahama Dogs in the Spotlight. Not a Good Th

The following story below was first broadcast on Thursday April 1st, 2010 and every day following until Saturday April 3rd, 2010, via channel 7 News (WSVN) in Miami Florida morning and evening.

My question is which government ministry is responsible for the day to day existence of household pets? Is there any such thing in this country as animal protection rights? I known that the Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for regulating and inspecting animals that is used as food, and the Ministry of Environmental Health Services regulates and monitors wild animals.

But who is responsible for regulating household pets?

The story below also sheds a very bad light on the wherewithal on the Government of the Bahamas, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Custom Department, Immigration Department, Environmental Health Services, as well as the five (5) FNM Government Members of Parliaments and two Government Senators.

How can it be that a group of volunteers along with a crew of reporters from a foreign television news station, just dance’s in on an island like Grand Bahama, up’s with 88 dogs a leave without consulting any government authority. Then make such serious allegations about the people not being able to take care of themselves let alone pets, and that there are only a few good homes on the island. And yet not a word from this wutlus government, with such proven leadership?

This is a total disgrace as it relates to the handling of this matter. Pets are an integral part of any modern society, and if you allow the world to look at us as a nation without policies and procedures to manage the affairs of pets, you will be looked at as an uncaring nation.

The people of Grand Bahama must hold the Government of the Bahamas accountable for their mismanagement and the unconcerned approach of this situation.

Sincerely,

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) — Several dogs arrived in South Florida hoping to find a loving home.
Eighty-eight dogs landed at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport Thursday morning from the Humane Society in Grand Bahama Island.
Several crates containing full-grown dogs to just puppies arrived to the arms of volunteers. “With longer hair to shorter hair. Little bit bigger, little bit smaller. Sweet dogs. Easy to train,” said a volunteer.

The dogs will be groomed, fed and dispersed to animal rescues across the country to be put up for adoption. “In Grand Bahama, the shelters there do a tremendous job. But there’s only so many good homes on an island. So, obviously you don’t have the wherewithal that you have here in Broward County and all the different shelters across the country that are opening up their doors for these animals. It’s wonderful,” said Amy Shepeard.

Fifteen dogs will be up for adoption at the Humane Society of Broward County, including two Husky-mixes.
Donations are dwindling in the struggling economy, and families are finding it hard to provide for themselves, let alone a pet. “This is not the solution for the problem for the overpopulation of the Bahamian dogs, but right now, it was an urgent need to get these dogs out because otherwise they would have been euthanized,” Said Heike Dose.

The dogs will be up for adoption by this weekend.
